Becoming an online entrepreneur is an opportunity that has only been available since the mid to late 1990s. Back then there were only a few brave souls who were willing to test the waters and find out just what this could mean to people who wanted to start a business using the new technologies that were just coming of age. During this time I was working as a classroom teacher and also in real estate, so even though I was using computers on a daily basis I never thought of this as a way to earn a living. It was people like Marlon Sanders and Dr. Jeanette Cates paved the way for doing business on what would become the Internet within a few years.
The turn of the century marked the point in time where many people began exploring this new world. This is the time when I began looking at the sites set up by the major retailers to find out what they had available for sale in their stores. I was not aware of anyone making purchases directly through these websites, but it must have become available in some form around this time. I was in the group of people who were reluctant to do anything more than research and email on a computer, and would not have dreamed of using a credit card over the Internet.
During the time period between 2001 and 2003 the Internet again took a jump as blogs and other self-published content became more commonplace. I was teaching technology at a middle school during this time, so I began teaching the students how to write some basic HTML code to set up one page sites on the web. We had great fun setting up these sites, and the parents enjoyed seeing what we were doing. Many of my parents at that time were small business owners, and I often wonder today if they had more vision and insight into the possibilities of what we were doing in the classroom back then than I did.
It seemed like overnight we were all using Google to find out everything from movie show times and map locations to medical information and more. It wasn't until 2005 that I became aware of people setting up one page websites for the purpose of selling information to others. The very first site I saw was one that sold an eBook on how to write a eulogy. This eBook sold for about twenty dollars and helped people who had been asked to give a eulogy for a loved one who had passed.
This was when I made the decision to come online to serve people who needed my help.
